Willem lutjens bookcase for Den Boer, Holland 1953

Original and rare “Stokkenkast” bookcase by Dutch designer Willem Lutjens made by Den Boer Holland in 1953. The overall condition is very good and the black Beech looks great from the Birch plywood shelves. The round Beench feet or rods, are connected through six shelves, hence the name “Stokkenkast”, which translates to sticks cabinet or cabinet made out of sticks. Normally these bookcases have fewer shelves as this was a modular designed system, every buyer could decide a composition to their choice, but this one is quite high.

Willem Lutjens is most known for this model and with this color scheme in particular, one tends to be reminded of the work of Ilmari Tapiovaara. This piece of Dutch design is very characteristic for the dutch post war designs, it was simple, easy to produce and made out of materials that were at hand. All in all, a great and interesting looking bookcase with beautiful history.
