Extremely Rare Pop Art Lounge Chair by Tue Poulsen for Domus Danica, Denmark, 1970. A sculptural and highly collectible design artifact of the Danish experimental era, this rare pop art lounge chair was created by acclaimed ceramicist Tue Poulsen and produced in a limited series by Domus Danica in 1970.
In an ambitious and short-lived collaboration between seven Danish furniture manufacturers, Domus Danica was formed with the vision of pushing the boundaries of material and form. For their debut at the Danish Furniture Fair at Bella Center, Copenhagen, Tue Poulsen, better known for his work in ceramics, was commissioned to explore fiberglass as a modern material for a new generation of furniture. The result was a striking, futuristic collection that boldly defied tradition, comprising a lounge chair, loveseat, chaise longue, sofa, and table.
This particular model, a double lounge chair or “loveseat”, is one of only 80 pieces ever produced, making it an exceptionally rare collector’s item. Its voluptuous, space-age form was sculpted directly by Poulsen in his own ceramic workshop, bringing a handcrafted, artistic sensibility to an industrial material. The chair’s white glossy finish enhances its flowing organic lines, giving it a sculptural presence that feels both radical and inviting, a true embodiment of 1970s avant-garde Scandinavian design.
What further elevates this piece is its original upholstery, a rare surviving example of fabric designed by celebrated Swedish textile artist Marjatta Metsovaara. Known for her bold colors and textured weaves, Metsovaara’s fabric remains in remarkably good original condition, adding historical depth and visual richness to the design.
The chair itself is in excellent vintage condition, especially considering its age and experimental nature. It shows a beautifully aged patina, with minor marks and very small small stress cracks in expected areas, mostly at the delicate sides, only adding character to this now-iconic work.
Mocked by some contemporaries at the time for its bold, space-age aesthetic, Poulsen’s fiberglass furniture has since become a cult symbol of pop art design in Denmark, cherished by collectors and design historians for its visionary spirit and rarity. A true conversation piece and a monument to the daring innovation of early 1970s Danish design, this chair represents a unique moment when art, material experimentation, and cultural optimism converged.
