The classy and rare Table Lamp Model 4639, designed and produced by Stilnovo in 1960, is a striking example of mid-century modern design. Interestingly, this lamp also exudes the charm of an earlier era, reminiscent of the 1940s and the Art Deco period. Its unique design features an unusually shaped base that doubles as a bowl for small items, leading to a sleek conical stem that rises toward the large, mushroom-shaped shade. A lower diffuser ring adds to its refined aesthetic while enhancing its illumination. The lamp boasts an exquisite and uncommon oxidized brass finish, which has developed a rich patina over time, further adding to its vintage appeal. This elegant piece emits a warm, diffused light, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere wherever it is placed.
Preserved in good original condition with visible patina, as seen in the pictures, this lamp is more than just a lighting fixture—it is a timeless piece of design history, reflecting Stilnovo’s impeccable vision and craftsmanship. Completely original with its original switch which is also oxidized and the original plug.
Literature; original Stilnovo catalogue from the 1960s, page 39.
Bruno Gatta, the director and head of design at Stilnovo for nearly its entire existence, founded the company in 1946 in Lainate, an industrial suburb of Milan. Unlike other Italian lighting brands such as Arredoluce and O’Luce, Stilnovo embraced true industrial production techniques between 1952 and 1955. The company was known for its bold experimentation with materials and forms, a philosophy that remained at the heart of its design process. Until the late 1960s, most designs came from Stilnovo’s in-house technical office, first led by Bruno Gatta and later by Gaetano Scolari. Gatta, a key figure in Italian design, passed away in 1976 in his birthplace of Linate.
Stilnovo quickly established itself as a leading force in contemporary lighting, blending innovation, artistic expression, and cutting-edge craftsmanship. The brand’s creations captured the essence of post-war Italy’s design renaissance, embodying both functionality and modern aesthetics. Over the years, Stilnovo collaborated with renowned designers and architects, producing an array of lighting solutions, including chandeliers, floor lamps, wall sconces, and pendant lights. Their pieces skillfully balanced form and function, incorporating premium materials such as metal, glass, and fabric to create striking, contemporary designs.
