The Minimalist Table Lamp Model 8023, designed by Bruno Gatta and produced by Stilnovo in 1955, is a standout example of mid-century modern design. Featuring a conical Carrara marble base, the lamp is both sturdy and elegant. Its brass angled stem adds warmth, contrasting with the cool marble, while the black-finished aluminum shade is round from the top and half-rounded from the side. The shade is attached with two brass bolts, enhancing both its aesthetics and structure. A nice feature in this specific example is its original brass pull cord which is often gone missing over time.
Emitting a soft, focused glow, this lamp is perfect for reading or desk work. In very good original condition, it retains its authentic Stilnovo sticker, a testament to its quality. The lamp not only serves as a functional lighting solution but also as a timeless piece of design history, reflecting Gatta’s vision and Stilnovo’s craftsmanship.
Bruno Gatta was the director and head of design from Stilnovo almost during the entire period. He founded the Stilnovo publishing house in 1946 in Lainate, an industrial suburb of Milan. Despite its small scale, Stilnovo operated according to a true industrial logic from 1952-1955 – unlike other Italian brands, such as Arredoluce and O’Luce. Experimentation with new materials and shapes is at the heart of its production method. Until the second half of the 1960s, most of the designs were made by the company’s technical office, which was led by Bruno Gatta, then headed by Gaetano Scolari and bore the brand’s signature. Bruno Gatta died in 1976 in his birthplace Linate.
