This large and impressive sculpture by Sergio Ponzio IV, crafted in Italy during the 1970s, is a striking example of his artistic vision and mastery. Inspired by musical instruments, this life-sized sculpture commands attention with its bold presence and flowing organic forms. Acquired directly from the artist’s estate, it holds both historical and artistic significance. Made from dark-stained pine wood, the sculpture’s surface showcases a meticulous process. Treated with flame, sanded into smooth, flowing shapes, and polished with multiple wax finishes, the wood reveals rich color variations and depth. The constructivist-inspired forms lend the piece a sculptural elegance, with shapes echoing the artistic movements of the era.

Sergio Ponzio, who began his career as a painter of still-life works, transitioned to sculptor in 1968, marking the start of an unbroken exploration of materials and their possibilities. Between 1968 and 1975, Ponzio worked with diverse mediums, including wood, iron, galvanized sheet metal, and copper, often experimenting with bas-reliefs in stratified wood. His work was deeply influenced by Turin’s vibrant artistic scene, particularly by Nerone Ceccarelli and Gruppo NP2, with these sepcific works we also have Arman in mind, a Franch sculptor who made similar pieces in Bronze. Although Ponzio remains a lesser-known figure within this Italian movement, his work stands out for its strength and distinctive character.

As a music lover, Ponzio drew inspiration from everyday objects, particularly musical instruments like guitars and violins, which resonate strongly in his work. This connection to daily life imbues his sculptures with a unique accessibility and emotional resonance, allowing viewers to find familiarity and intrigue in his art.

This listing is for the lower but wider sculpture from a pair originally purchased together. In very good condition, with only minor age-related wear, this piece is a captivating testament to Ponzio’s artistry and vision, making it a remarkable addition to any art collection or interior space.
