Very nice sculptural S28 chairs designed by Pierre Chapo and made in his own atelier in France in 1972. Pierre Chapo discovered Alsatian architecture, the wood structures of the traditional half-timbered houses and the tried an tested household furniture. The interior of a home was the vital space in wintertime, and the heart of the house was a large table, where family and friends gathered for meals and winter evenings.

Struck by the traditional “Aslation chair,” Chapo decided to modernize it . In 1972, he designed the S28 chair, keeping the basic characteristics of the “Alsatian chair” but ridding it of its decorative elements. The back is made of a single piece of Elm wood, the seat is in solid flat Elm an the four legs point outwards. Each piece of wood was shaped with care and precision. The S28 is a modern chairs that maintains the silhouette and comfort of the “Alsatian chair.’ The chairs are in fantastic original condition. Priced and sold in a set of 6 chairs, also 3 separate ones available. These chairs were purchased together with the T14D and are a great match. The table you can find here.

The work of Chapo combines ancient woodworking skill and tradition with a contemporary approach. In designing his distinguished pieces, Solid oak, elm, teak, and ash were mainly used. After graduating from the Parisian École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in architectural studies, he travelled through Scandinavia, Central America, and the United States. After returning to the French capital, he opened his own gallery in 1958 on boulevard de l’Hôpital 14, where among other artists mainly his and Isamu Noguchi’s creations were on display. In 1960, he received a gold medal from the city of Paris as a token of appreciation for his contributions to the city. Pierre Chapo is for sure one of the best designers from French soil, clearly to be seen at his architectural designs and craftsmanship.
