These Model S11 chairs, designed by Pierre Chapo in 1966 and manufactured in his own atelier in Gordes, France, are a remarkable example of mid-century modern design. Crafted from solid elm wood, these very early chairs are distinguished by their natural leather seats and backrests. A unique and charming detail is the rope fixation of the seats at the underside, a testament to Chapo’s attention to both form and function.
One of the standout features of the Model S11 chairs is the distinctive joints at the corners, a trademark of Chapo’s craftsmanship that showcases his exceptional woodworking skills. Over the years, the chairs have developed an astonishing patina, with the strong, patinated leather adding a lot of character and charm. The elm wooden frames have also acquired a beautiful dark patina, a natural consequence of their age and usage.
Despite their vintage condition, these chairs remain perfectly usable for many years to come. However, it’s important to note that they exhibit significant signs of use, a feature that may either be adored or less appreciated depending on personal taste. The chairs are sold as a set of 8, priced accordingly, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of design history imbued with both aesthetic and functional qualities.
