This stunning pair of S10 lounge chairs, designed by Pierre Chapo and crafted in his own atelier in France in 1964, exemplifies the masterful woodworking and timeless aesthetic for which Chapo is renowned. Constructed from solid elm, the chairs feature his signature mortise and tenon joint system, a hallmark of his craftsmanship and an innovative assembly principle that allowed him to expand his catalog that same year. The S10 quickly became one of the most iconic and sought after models in the Chapo gallery, celebrated for its perfect balance of form, function, and material integrity.
These chairs retain their original natural leather, which remains in fantastic condition. Over time, the leather has developed a beautiful patina, with slight variations between the two chairs, adding unique character and depth. The combination of the warm-toned elm frame and the richly aged leather creates a striking contrast that enhances their sculptural quality.
As an early production set, these chairs exhibit exceptional woodworking details, which can be seen documented in M. Hagen Gallery’s book on Chapo’s work, page 55. Finding an original pair of S10 chairs is incredibly difficult, especially in such well-preserved condition. Their refined yet robust design makes them an ideal addition to any interior, whether mid-century modern, contemporary, or minimalist.
This set of two is priced and sold individually if wanted, but its a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic piece of Pierre Chapo’s design legacy.
