This is for a remarkable pair of large garden sculptures created by the renowned Dutch artist Peter van Veelen (1935–2023). These sculptures, crafted in 1966, come directly from the artist’s own garden and are a testament to his deep fascination with nature and organic forms. The asymmetrical, bone-like shapes are strikingly reminiscent of natural organisms, and their fluid, organic design is a hallmark of van Veelen’s artistic vision.
Each sculpture is made from multiple pieces of terracotta, a material van Veelen chose for its versatility and ability to retain fine detail. Terracotta, a clay-based material, is known for its natural earth tones and durability, making it an ideal choice for both indoor and outdoor use. By using small terracotta parts, van Veelen was able to produce these sculptures in his own small atelier, giving each piece a personal, handcrafted touch.
The sculptures are mounted on sturdy stone tiles, providing stability in the garden, while the tops are finished with metal plates to prevent water from entering. Over the years, the sculptures have developed a beautiful and original patina from exposure to the elements, adding to their character and making them even more captivating. As a pair, these unique sculptures are a stunning addition to any garden, blending art with the natural world in a way that reflects van Veelen’s deep connection to nature.
A quote from the artist; I am a wanderer on the border between earth and water. I show you what drives me: drawing, painting, and sculpting in wood. I am a writer of thoughts/poems. Once outside of me, it becomes your story. Art is observing/observing is the art of seeing/with eyes wide open, drawing closer/endless wonder.
