Very nice sculptural MP97 lounge sofa designed and manufactured by Percival Lafer, Brazil 1970. Percival Lafer was one of the leading furniture design manufacturers in Brazil who managed to produce furniture on a large, industrial scale. This model however is very rare and hard to find and especially in its very good original condition. It has a nice bulky and voluptuous appearance. But with its geometric legs in solid jatoba wood, it has a very nice constructional detail which contributes to the aesthetics of the design. The original very dark brown leather seat is hanging in very nice construction with natural leather straps which contrast nicely with the dark brown leather. The sofa is in good original condition with a minimal patina which gives the chairs character from years of usage. We have a matching set of lounge chairs available from this set too, available in another listing. The sofa is fully labelled on the side with the silver Lafer sticker and it also has the original paper label on the underside of the upholstery, where you can see this is still fully original. A very nice detail which contributes to the value of an original piece as this.
When it comes to mid-century furniture, the innovative work of the Brazilian modernists has often been overlooked, including the designs of prolific maker Percival Lafer. Lafer studied architecture at São Paulo’s Universidade Mackenzie. After he graduated, his father passed away suddenly, leaving a furniture business that Lafer took over with his brothers. Taking up the mantle, Lafer made the jump from architecture to furniture design in 1961, putting a focus on thoughtfully designed pieces available at affordable prices.
