A truly exceptional and rare offering for a pair of MP-5 lounge chairs designed by Percival Lafer and manufactured by Lafer MP in Brazil, 1961. These early examples capture the pioneering spirit of Brazilian modernism, where architectural clarity meets tactile luxury. Crafted with a steel internal structure and sheathed in richly grained rosewood, the MP-5 chairs exemplify Lafer’s architectural rigor and his deep respect for materials. The chairs have been reupholstered in a luxurious camel-colored velvet, precisely following the original upholstery pattern, a seamless marriage of authenticity and renewal.
Their slender steel legs, encased in wood, lend the design an almost ethereal presence. As Lafer himself explained, “there is just a slim piece of wood supporting the piece because of the steel soul.” This quote encapsulates the visual and structural lightness that defines these chairs. The design is at once minimal and inviting. A geometric rosewood frame forms the base, while the organic contour of the seat, also used in Lafer’s MP-1 lounge chair, offers ergonomic comfort and sculptural softness. The MP-5 shares its seating design with the MP-1 series, Lafer’s first foray into furniture design and the inaugural line of the Lafer brand. Already in 1961, Lafer was expressing a forward-thinking design language that would go on to influence generations of Brazilian furniture makers.
