Sculptural small round coffee table designed by Paul Kingma and manufactured in his own atelier around Den Haag, The Netherlands in the 1970s. This table is a fairly early example from the hands of Paul Kingma as he started at the end of the 1950s together with Rien Goené. Rien Goené focussed more on sculpting where Paul Kingma focussed on the mosaic tables where he got very famous for. This table is from the 1970s, it is from the beginning period of his work as he made these kinds of tables until the late 90s. Paul Kingma was well known for his architectural tables that pay a tribute to the riches of Nature by travelling extensively in search of rare materials, whether raw or industrially produced. He combines resources to materials used in architecture like stone, metal and concrete, with rich varied materials as brass, copper, glass or ceramic. All his tables are unique one-off productions making these tables always unique. This specific table has 3 cylindrical metal legs, in black painted finish which you can place playful to your own wishes.
As a sculptor, Kingma made several works for public space. He was best known as a mosaic artist with his heavy Kingma tables, which he started in the late 1950s.Out of admiration for the life and history of the earth, he inlaid tables with natural stone and materials that he collected from all over the world. Later he made tableaux with fossils and petrified wood, “an independent design that can later be used as a table”. He was appointed in 1961 as the first director of the Institute for Visual Expression in Amersfoort and gave mosaic lessons there for five years. His tables were very popular and still fit in nowadays modern homes and interiors. And you will always have something in your home which is one of a kind.
