This rare and captivating dining table was designed by the Italian duo Nerone Ceccarelli and Gianni Patuzzi for the avant-garde collective Gruppo NP2 in Italy, 1971. More than a functional piece of furniture, it stands as a bold sculptural statement, a true example of Italian artistic craftsmanship at its finest.
The table features a substantial rectangular glass top, which elegantly showcases the dynamic base structure beneath. Composed of two monumental carved wooden supports, the base reflects a masterful balance between architectural form and abstract expression. Each support is individually hand-carved, creating a powerful sense of depth, rhythm, and negative space that transforms the base into an engaging visual landscape. The forms resemble abstract architecture, drawing inspiration from Brutalist design while maintaining a distinctly artistic flair. Since the bases are separately, they can be placed beyond everyone’s imagination, adding your personal touch to the design.
The transparent glass top enhances the table’s presence, offering an uninterrupted view of the sculptural base from every angle. This interplay of solid wood and clear glass emphasizes the contrast between mass and lightness, volume and void. The craftsmanship and composition reflect the influence of Nerone Ceccarelli, the artistic force behind many of Gruppo NP2’s sculptural works, and highlight the group’s focus on combining geometry, texture, and asymmetry into bold, statement-making forms.
Gruppo NP2, active in the Torino area during the 1970s, was known for their groundbreaking approach to design, blending fine art and functional objects. Founded by Ceccarelli and Patuzzi, the collective gained recognition for their experimental methods and their use of unconventional materials and sculptural techniques. Their work often blurred the lines between furniture and sculpture, and this table is a perfect example of that unique philosophy.
A rare find, this table embodies the essence of Italian radical design and remains highly sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs of 20th-century design. It’s an artwork in itself, one that brings structure, sophistication, and a rich narrative into any interior. Whether placed in a contemporary or eclectic setting, it serves as a timeless centerpiece with enduring artistic value. The table is in very good original condition, the wood showing an authentic patina and the glass top was newly made.
