The iconic “Saratoga” sofa, designed by Italian design duo Massimo and Lella Vignelli is manufactured by Poltronova in 1964. It is a striking example of mid-century modern design. Known for their minimalist and architectural approach, the Vignellis created this large, three-seater sofa with an emphasis on form and function, completely free from decorative excess. The “Saratoga” is celebrated as one of the earliest examples of modular and modern living in the 20th century. The Vignellis designed this piece not merely as a piece of furniture but as an architectural element within a space. In their own words: “We have designed this sofa because we really needed a sofa. And the sofa we wanted was one with an architectural character rather than a soft, smooth object. A sofa that could be set out in the middle of the room. We didn’t want it to be pushed up against the walls; we wanted it to move around as needed.”
The sofa’s design is defined by its bold, box-shaped modules crafted in black, high-gloss polyester, offering a sleek and durable framework. This hard-edged structure is beautifully softened by luxurious, down-filled leather cushions in a rich cognac hue, providing both comfort and a sophisticated visual contrast. The cushions not only enhance the comfort but also add a tactile and warm quality to the otherwise minimalist design. One of the sofa’s standout features is its modularity—allowing the components to be rearranged or expanded with ease, adapting to a variety of settings and uses. This flexibility, combined with the sofa’s heavy and durable construction, exemplifies Poltronova’s commitment to quality craftsmanship.
This particular piece remains in very good condition, showcasing slight craquelure on the black lacquer, which adds a touch of vintage charm. The leather cushions have developed a beautiful patina over time, highlighting the natural aging process of high-quality materials. The “Saratoga” sofa by Massimo and Lella Vignelli is more than just seating; it is a functional sculpture with an enduring appeal, perfect for those who appreciate timeless design and the transformative power of thoughtful, modular furniture.
