Mario Bellini, a famous Italian designer and architect born in Milan in 1935, is well-known for combining nature-inspired looks with modern Italian design. He finished his studies at Politecnico di Milano in 1959 and quickly became a notable figure. Bellini worked at La Rinascente and Olivetti, where he managed design until 1993. In 1963, he started his design studio, Studio Bellini, creating notable pieces like the 932 leather armchair for Cassina.
In the 1970s, Bellini continued to make iconic designs, including the Colonato table, inspired by ancient Roman columns, and the Kar-a-Sutra concept car, displayed at MoMA in 1972. His collaborations included the Le Bambole armchair and sofa for B&B Italia and the Camaleonda sofa for C&B Italia. Bellini also designed the Divissuma calculator for Olivetti. His impact extended into the 1980s, where he worked on projects like the Cernobbio Convention Center.
Bellini’s notable furniture designs include the Bellini chair for Heller in 1998, the Ypsilon office chair for Vitra in 2001, and the Opera armchair by Meritalia in 2016. He received many awards, including eight Compasso d’Oro awards and a Medaglia d’Oro from the Triennale di Milano. In 1987, MoMA held a retrospective of his furniture design work, showcasing 25 of his pieces from its permanent collection.
