This exceptional and rare set of 2 sofa tables was designed and handcrafted by Marcus Kingma in the Netherlands in 1980. Marcus, the son of renowned artist Paul Kingma, followed in his father’s footsteps by creating unique and artistic tables that combine raw materials with bold, sculptural forms. While Paul Kingma began his work in the 1960s and gained acclaim for his artistic concrete tables, Marcus developed his own interpretation of this style in the 1980s and 1990s, adding a distinctive touch to his pieces.
This matching pair of early sofa tables represents a particularly rare example from Marcus’s early career. Each table is signed and dated “M. Kingma ’80” on the surface, confirming their authenticity and period. The tabletops are crafted from concrete, inlaid with natural slate, stones, and brass elements, carefully arranged into abstract, textured compositions that celebrate material contrast and visual depth. The sturdy bases consist of two U-shaped metal supports, painted black for a minimal, industrial look that complements the brutalist style of the tops.
A unique one-off set, these tables are more than functional furniture, they are true works of art. Highly collectible and striking, they would make a standout addition to any contemporary or modern interior in search of bold, character-rich design.
Kindly note that these tables are only sold in a set of 2.
Having dealt with Paul Kingma’s work for several years, we have witnessed a significant increase in their value while their availability has decreased, particularly for pristine, early examples. Owning this table means possessing a piece of design history and a unique statement piece that few others will have in their homes.
