Condition report

A remarkable and rare early work by Marcus Kingma, this sculptural coffee table was designed and handcrafted in the Netherlands in 1982. Marcus, son of renowned Dutch artist Paul Kingma, followed in his father’s artistic path while developing a distinctive voice of his own during the 1980s and 1990s. While Paul gained recognition for his expressive concrete tabletops inlaid with natural materials, Marcus introduced a new level of structural innovation and abstraction to the form.

This particular table represents an exceptional example from Marcus Kingma’s early period. Its striking cross-shaped base, formed by four U-shaped steel supports, is unlike any seen in his father’s work and rarely found in Marcus’s own. Painted black, the industrial base creates a clean, architectural contrast to the textured surface above, grounding the piece firmly within the Brutalist style.

The tabletop itself is crafted in concrete and richly inlaid with natural slate, stones, and brass details. These elements are arranged into an abstract and rhythmic composition that highlights the contrast of texture, tone, and form. A copper plaque embedded in the surface is signed and dated “M. Kingma ’82,” confirming both the authenticity and the period of the piece. Very good original condition with light age-related wear consistent with its material and age.

Like all works in the Kingma tradition, this table is entirely unique—part of a series, yet singular in its form and expression. More than a functional object, it stands as a collectible sculptural artwork, ideal for interiors that value bold design and material-driven narratives.

Highly collectible and increasingly scarce, especially in early and signed examples, Marcus Kingma’s tables represent a vital chapter in the story of postwar Dutch design. With a growing collector base and rising market value, this is not only a rare acquisition, but a lasting design statement.
