Rare ‘Ambiguita’ console table designed by Lella e Massimo Vignelli and manufactured by Casigliani, Italy 1983. This console has a very nice appearance due to its unique blend of materials. Topped with Carrara marble and standing on a Marquina marble base with a copper cylindrical pillar, it’s got a really stylish look. Rare first production with the ‘broken’ look edges. The Vignelli’s said ‘the table has a beginning but not an end, we don’t know if and where it ends.’

In this version the Ambiguita console was first presented at the Milano design fair. Later versions went for a simpler, straight-cut look for practical reasons, but this original design steals the spotlight. It’s in great shape, and you can secure its parts either by locking them together or using screws.

Massimo and Lella Vignelli both studied architecture before founding the Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture in 1960. In 1971 they established Vignelli Associates, a vehicle for focusing on projects that incorporated their industrial, furniture and graphic design talents. Their diverse portfolio includes corporate identity work for IBM, American Airlines, and Bloomingdales as well as signage for the New York Subway system and Washington, D.C.

Maurizio Casigliani, a proponent of marble’s timeless appeal, collaborated with designers Lella and Massimo Vignelli in the late seventies. Together, they birthed the Metafora 1 table, showcasing primary shapes like cubes and spheres in marble. This intentional choice reflects a commitment to durability and immunity to fleeting trends. The table’s transparent top, made of noble crystal, complements the solid marble supports. Over the years, Casigliani’s production continued to prioritize the unique characteristics of marble, exploring various textures and finishes. As Casigliani looks to the future, new design collaborations and creative energies contribute to the ongoing evolution of this tradition, blending authentic culture with innovative forms in marble production.
