This outdoor sculpture, created in France during the 1960s, is a captivating example of mid-20th-century abstract art. It features two hollow, cube-like structures stacked vertically, separated by a central pole, and mounted on a sleek, custom-made black base. This base allows the sculpture to stand freely while retaining the option of being fixed into the ground, as originally intended. Additionally, the new base enables the sculpture to be rotated, offering versatility in its display.
The surfaces of the cubes are intricately carved with dynamic, organic patterns that evoke the energy and fluidity characteristic of the Cobra art style. Adorning the sculpture are symbols such as stars, fish, flowers, and birds, making each side unique and offering a distinct perspective from every angle. The openings in the cubes not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also create a fascinating interplay of light and shadow, adding depth and texture to the piece.
Although the artist remains unidentified, the work reflects a strong influence of the Cobra art movement, a European avant-garde collective active in the late 1940s and 1950s. Known for its emphasis on spontaneity, symbolism, and natural forms, the movement’s ethos is evident in the sculpture’s sinuous, rhythmic motifs that exude vitality and movement. The piece’s intricate design and artistic flair suggest the possibility of being the creation of a great artist.
It is besides the black base in original condition, there is a crack at the bottom pole that we fixed again with heavy duty glue for outdoor use, and attached it to the black support. Since the piece has a complete metal structure inside, it can normally not break.
This work stands as a remarkable testament to the era’s fascination with blending modernist abstraction and primal, almost mythological themes. Its craftsmanship, innovative design, and symbolic richness make it a compelling addition to the legacy of French sculptural art from the 1960s.
