This stunning and sophisticated sideboard from the “Componivel” series, designed by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by his own company, L’Atelier, in Brazil in 1959, is a true masterpiece of mid-century Brazilian design. Zalszupin’s modular furniture is instantly recognizable for its pioneering constructivist approach, making him a trailblazer in creating versatile and customizable pieces.
The “Componivel” series showcased an array of designs, all built upon the same core principles and distinctive features. Regardless of size, each cabinet featured a patchwork of Jacaranda rosewood veneered sections, skillfully set between a top and bottom plate. This clever construction created a minimalist and harmonious appearance, with recessed hinges and signature handles that were thoughtfully drilled out and veneered for a seamless finish.
One of the standout features of this particular sideboard is its rare and elegant X-shaped chrome-plated feet. These feet were a less common and more luxurious option at the time, likely contributing to their rarity today. The sideboard has been fully refinished, preserving its original character while maintaining a beautiful, authentic patina.
Offering ample storage, the sideboard includes four wooden folding doors, each with a shelf behind it, and four central drawers for additional organization. The back of the piece is also beautifully finished, allowing it to serve as a room divider and enhancing its versatility in any space. This sideboard is not only a functional storage solution but also a striking example of Zalszupin’s exceptional craftsmanship and design innovation.
