This stunning and sophisticated small-sized sideboard from the “Componível” series is a rare and refined example of mid-century Brazilian design. Created in 1959 by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by his own company, L’Atelier, the piece embodies the visionary spirit of a designer who helped define the aesthetic and innovation of modern Brazil.
Zalszupin’s modular furniture broke new ground with its constructivist logic and commitment to environmental consciousness, decades ahead of its time. By using carefully selected pieces of scrap rosewood veneer, he not only minimized material waste but also created a striking patchwork surface that became a hallmark of the Componível series. Each segment of wood is framed between elegantly proportioned top and bottom planes, giving the cabinet a clean, modern profile. Handles are discreetly drilled and veneered, and recessed hinges contribute to the seamless, architectural finish.
This particular piece is an especially rare variant, featuring elegant X-shaped chrome-plated steel legs, a luxurious option that was produced in limited numbers and adds a sculptural, elevated quality to the overall composition. Its proportions offer versatile storage: four drawers and two folding doors are paired with an open central niche, ideal for display or visual lightness. With a beautifully finished back, the sideboard is also well-suited as a room divider, bringing flexibility and presence to open interiors.
Lovingly restored by specialists with deep respect for the original design, the sideboard maintains its authentic patina while presenting in excellent condition. Every detail, from the rich depth of the Jacaranda to the crisp geometry of the form, speaks to the exceptional craftsmanship and design discipline of Zalszupin’s L’Atelier workshop. This piece is not only a functional and beautiful addition to a refined interior, but also a highly collectible work of design history.
