Stunning and rare early original so-called ‘Petalas’ coffee table designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Pétalas series was created in order to make the best possible use of the wood used during production as leftover pieces from the Andorinha table, those pieces were used to make these parts. In creating both the Andorinha and Pétalas inspiration was drawn from folded paper origami structures. In order to create folded shapes, layers of Brazilian Jacaranda rosewood were hot-pressed into a mould. This table is composed of 8 “petalas” of layered jacaranda Brazilian rosewood on a round metal structure, together they form an octagonal round shape. The pétalas series varies in shape and size, two important differences that distinguish the series from each other are round and square shapes, and the number of legs used. Round tables consist of eight parts, whereas the small tables have four parts. Fantastic, very early version of the Petalas table which shows a beautiful grain of the Jacaranda and remarkable flames in the grain of the wood. The outer wood is fully refinished and in good condition again, very nice warm jacaranda colour. Slight craquelé still visible at the rosewood veneer, this is one of the characteristic features of this table when original and endured through time. The table has been kept fully original at the inside to show maintain its originality and has the early square L’Atelier label on the bottom.
