Fantastic Paulistana lounge chair designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. After travelling to Germany and Denmark in the early sixties, Zalszupin started to develop and apply new techniques such as moulding plywood, which was still a relatively new technique for that era. The first design that originated from this experiment was the Paulistana lounge chair with additional ottoman. The design consisted of moulded Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood outer shells, leather upholstery, and a chrome plated metal base. The rosewood outside has a mesmerizing pattern in the rosewood and a beautiful original slightly faded tone in the wood. The design is reminiscent of the iconic 670 chair by Charles and Ray Eames but is a typical visual language that strongly coherent with Brazilian modernism. A nice detail is the solid brass hardware to fix the arms to the shell and hold the frame together. This cross embossed hardware is often used in the designs of Zalszupin, in a variety of sizes. The Paulistana chair was upholstered by the previous owner several years ago, in a nice liver coloured leather which is still in good condition. A very nice shaped and super comfortable lounge chair in stunning condition. The listed price is for the chair and ottoman.
