Rare pair of so-called Jockey chairs designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Jockey chair is one of L’Ateliers’ early models and is designed with mass production and efficient use of materials in mind. The sophisticated hardwood frame hosts the stretched natural buffalo leather upholstery that seems to float lightly over it. The frame is fully made of hardwood beams, which make a sturdy construction and aesthetic craftsmanship. Besides being a constructive necessity, the details and screws are also an aesthetic addition to the whole and are instead of concealed, intended to stand out, which is a typical of Zalszupins’ work. The chairs are in very good original condition, the thick saddle leather has a striking patina from age and usage which adds a lot of character to the chairs. These chairs are priced and sold in a set of 2.
Provenance; This set of chairs comes from a holiday home in Biarritz, where Brazilian people had a holiday home close to their home country; Portugal. We acquired several pieces from this home, including these 2 chairs.
