The iconic and rare “Cubo” lounge sofa, designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his company L’Atelier in Brazil in the 1960s, is a masterpiece of modernist design. The “Cubo” series embodies a bold and innovative design language, responding to and shaping the trends of its time while retaining a distinctive character. True to its name, which translates to “cube,” the design is defined by boldness and hard lines. The seat, with its smooth, rounded curves, appears as if sculpted from the cube itself, creating a striking contrast between form and function. The sofa’s base, crafted from black ebonized plywood, recedes under the seat, giving the appearance of a floating silhouette and adding an element of lightness to its solid structure.
While the series included chairs, sofas, tables, and poufs, the exact number produced remains uncertain, making surviving examples especially rare. This particular sofa has a fascinating provenance, originating from a state building in Brasília, where it retains its heritage tag along the rim.
Recently restored, the sofa has been reupholstered to its original design in luxurious camel brown velvet mohair, a choice that complements its sophisticated aesthetic while enhancing its comfort. The original inventory tag remains affixed to the front, preserving a link to its historical significance.
This “Cubo” sofa is not just a piece of furniture but a work of art that bridges history and design. It’s a collector’s dream and a statement piece that elevates any interior space, blending timeless elegance with a sense of bold modernity.
