Mesmerizing ‘Cubo’ club chairs designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. Cubo chairs and sofas, made in the 1970’s show how the design language responded and created new trends, but still manage to hold their distinctive character. Boldness and hard lines were the basic principle in the design of the Cubo chair, which literally translates into ‘cube’. The seat with its round curves appears to be scooped out of the cube. The bottom seems to be floating, with a black ebonized plywood base that falls back under the seat itself and creates shadow. Besides the chairs, sofas, tables, and poofs were also made. However, it is not clear how many of them were made, since they are hard to come across in his rosewood finished version. These specific examples come from a bank building in Brasilia, it is the only known set on the market which is made in rosewood. The fabric finished examples are more common and are visually less interesting. The rosewood of these chairs has an amazing colour, and grain. Which make the chairs more interesting to look at. As the drawing of the rosewood is like a work of art on its own. The chairs are fully original and has its original upholstery which is in okay condition. To make it perfect, reupholstery is advised, we would estimate the upholstery is 85% good. The chairs are marked with an inventory tag on the front side, this is the inventory nr of the bank where they come from. On the last picture you will see a matching sofa which come from the same building. An amazing and unique set.
Provenance; BRB Banco Regional de Brasilia (1965) original heritage plates on the lower front of the structure.
