Large sized wall relief by Harmen van der Tuin made in his own atelier in the Netherlands in 2023. This artwork is made of plaster with a hardener and resin on polystyrene and wood. He uses a special painting technique that makes this artworks look both like paintings and a sculpture. Really nice and thick brush strokes that are super inviting to look at. The surface has a special texture, like velvet. This artwork goes beyond mere representations; they stand as independent entities with their own intrinsic value. This aligns van der Tuin with the tradition of ZERO artists such as Robert Ryman, Johannes Schoonhoven, Bram Bogart and Yves Klein. Whe work evokes a minimalist aesthetic at times, while also embracing a lively and expressionistic quality on other occasions. This dynamic tension drives the creative process, much like the changing seasons in nature. A truly unique piece and is hand signed and dated at the back.
Harmen van der Tuin was raised in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands, and at the age of 16, he moved to Zwolle. From an early age, he was deeply touched by music and the arts, realizing that this was his calling in life. He began studying classical guitar at the age of nine. Later, he attended the high school for the arts (ARTEZ) and graduated when he was 24 years old. From then on, he embarked on a career as an artist. At the age of 30, he had a profound spiritual experience during deep meditation, known as the Unio Mystica, which completely changed his perspective on life. This awakening had a significant impact on him, leading him on a long journey of integration. Now, he works as a designer, composer, and artist, occasionally giving Satsang sessions. He has had the privilege of designing notable commissions, such as the Dutch part of the horticultural world expo in Shenyang, China, where he designed the pavilion and several sculptures. He has received several nominations and design awards for his work. The artist’s work is all about finding beauty in simple things, imperfections, and the way things change over time. Sometimes his art looks very simple, other times it’s more lively and expressive. His art aims to show important truths about people and the world, offering wisdom and comfort in confusing times.
