Presenting a rare and sophisticated lounge chair, designed by Giuseppe Rossi and produced by his own company, Rossi di Albizzate, in Italy, 1978. This top-quality piece is renowned for its durability and craftsmanship. The base is constructed from thick, solid steel that has been expertly chrome-plated for a sleek and polished finish. The seating features a beautifully curved leather sling in black, with detailed stitching and padded striping that evoke a timeless, refined aesthetic. A comfortable leather cushion is attached to the chair, making it the perfect piece for lounging in style. In good original condition, the chair boasts a gentle patina that enhances its character, reflecting its age while preserving its classic charm.
Founded in 1923 in Varese, Rossi di Albizzate became a major force in the Italian design scene under Giuseppe Rossi’s leadership. Initially working alongside his brother in upholstery, mattresses, and saddlery in Arsago, Giuseppe eventually founded his own company in Cavaria with his wife, Maria Saporiti. The company relocated to Albizzate in 1980, adopting the new name. Rossi di Albizzate achieved prominence during the 1970s, collaborating with many notable designers and playing a significant role in the development of the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The company’s importance is further highlighted by its inclusion in the Museum of Italian Design at the Triennale Milano.
A turning point for the brand came in the late 1960s with innovations in cold-foamed polyurethane, leading to the patenting of the Rofoam mixture. Architects like G. Vitelli and T. Ammannati introduced groundbreaking designs such as the world’s first modular sofa, the Grandangolo. C. Bartoli expanded the company’s presence with showrooms in Milan and Rome, and in 1976, a partnership with the Borbonese fashion house saw the introduction of unique birdseye leather furniture. By the early 1990s, the next generation, Luigi and Piero Rossi, took over, continuing the legacy of excellence with new designer collaborations and further recognition, including a second piece entering the Museum of Italian Design.
