Exceptional Brutalist Coffee Table by Giuseppe Rivadossi for Officina Rivadossi, Italy, ca. 1979. This rare and sculptural Brutalist coffee table by renowned Italian sculptor and furniture designer Giuseppe Rivadossi stands as a masterwork of craftsmanship and poetic design. Created in the late 1970s and produced by Officina Rivadossi, his own atelier established in 1976, this piece is a unique and highly collectible example of Rivadossi’s architectural and materially expressive approach to modern furniture.
The table features a massive circular base meticulously constructed from individually arranged parts of solid walnut in varying tonalities, forming a harmonious mosaic of grain and rhythm. The interior of the cylindrical structure reveals Rivadossi’s signature hand-carved gouge texture, giving it the distinct sculptural depth that defines his oeuvre. This interplay of texture and geometry creates a dynamic tension, solid and monumental when viewed from the side, yet light and open from above, thanks to the negative space within the circular form.
Crowning the base is a thick round glass top that both contrasts and enhances the richness of the carved walnut, allowing the architectural base to be admired from all angles. The glass is in excellent condition, free of notable wear along the edges. This table is not only a piece of furniture but a functional sculpture, and one of the finest manifestations of Rivadossi’s philosophy: to create objects that celebrate material, hand, and the intimacy of human scale. Rarely seen on the market, and even more so in this version and condition, this table represents a defining moment in the evolution of post-war Italian design, where art and utility meet.
Born in Monteclana di Nave, Italy, Giuseppe Rivadossi is a sculptor and designer whose lifelong relationship with wood began in his youth. In 1962, he took over the family workshop, originally founded by his father Clemente, and transformed it into a creative atelier rooted in artisanal practice and sculptural experimentation. In 1976, he formalized this transformation with the founding of Officina Rivadossi, a collaborative workshop dedicated to the production of one-of-a-kind wooden objects and furniture. Rivadossi’s work is celebrated for its deep respect for material, time-honored technique, and its lyrical, almost monastic sense of form.
