A remarkable expression of Postmodern design sensibility, this rare dining or working table was designed by Italian architect Giulio Lazzotti and manufactured by Mageia in the early 1980s. Sculptural, enigmatic, and materially rich, the table exemplifies Lazzotti’s experimental approach to form and his deep-rooted fascination with stone.
The design centers around a substantial solid slate top, beautifully oval in shape and finished with a naturally textured surface in a rich, deep grey tone. Resting beneath are six rounded legs in solid wood, symmetrically arranged in triangular formations, three on each side, creating both visual rhythm and structural balance. Painted in a soft grey, the open wood grain remains visible, giving the impression of synthetic or “engineered” wood, and lending the table a tactile, almost surreal quality.
This dialogue between heavy, ancient materials and light, architectural form speaks to Lazzotti’s broader design ethos: a marriage of traditional masonry techniques with contemporary abstraction. The result is a piece that feels at once brutalist, modernist, and deeply natural, seamlessly fitting into a range of interiors, from minimalist to eclectic, contemporary to wabi-sabi.
Not merely a table, but a design statement, this piece could serve equally well as a centerpiece dining table, an imposing desk, or a gallery-worthy architectural object. The robust stone top also makes it suitable for covered outdoor environments, adding versatility to its artistic merit.
Produced in very limited numbers, Lazzotti’s tables rarely surface on the market, making this example both collectible and investment-worthy. It remains in very good original condition, with the slate top beautifully preserved and the wooden legs showing only light signs of age, adding to its character and authenticity.
