The Model 607 Table Lamp, designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1971 and manufactured by Arteluce, Italy, is a remarkable example of mid-century modern design, blending technical innovation with formal elegance. Created during a period when halogen light bulbs were an exciting new technology, this lamp was conceived to accommodate this novel light source, as well as its necessary transformer, within the compact form of a table lamp. The result is a beautifully functional piece that showcases Sarfatti’s ability to merge cutting-edge technology with sculptural aesthetics.
The Model 607 is composed of two distinct yet harmoniously integrated elements: a flat, disc-shaped diffuser with a truncated cone section and a solid, inclined parallelepiped base. The diffuser emits a soft, focused light, while the angled base provides stability and balance, ensuring the lamp’s sleek design remains grounded. Both components are crafted from painted aluminum, with the diffuser featuring a distinctive crackled finish — a hallmark of Sarfatti’s design sensibility, adding texture and depth to the lamp’s visual appeal.
This particular version of the lamp is finished in a rich dark grey, and is in fantastic, fully original condition. Its minimalist form is a testament to Sarfatti’s ability to create both a functional light source and an object of beauty. The dimmer switch is conveniently located at the front, near the foot of the base, providing easy control over the light’s intensity. Additionally, a small hole at the back allows for effortless handling, evoking the iconic photograph by Aldo Ballo for Arteluce, where the lamp is carried like a bag, highlighting its portability and playful practicality.
The Model 607 remains a true collector’s item today, embodying both Sarfatti’s visionary design and the technical advancements of the era. Fully tested and functional, this piece represents the pinnacle of Italian lighting design from one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Whether displayed in a contemporary home or an art collection, the lamp’s timeless elegance and innovative spirit continue to captivate.
