The adjustable floor lamp model 1096, designed by Gino Sarfatti and manufactured by Arteluce in Italy in 1971, exemplifies the sleek and innovative design characteristic of Sarfatti’s work. This modernist lamp features a cylindrical reflector, lacquered in a crackle caviar grey finish, mounted on a chrome-plated adjustable stem. The base of the lamp, also lacquered in caviar crackle like the shade, incorporates a functional ashtray, a nod to the era’s design sensibilities. The back of the base shows an open circle which serves not only as an aesthetically feature but also as a handle to easy move the lamp around.
This lamp is not only adjustable in height, making it versatile for various lighting needs, but also includes a halogen bulb, reflecting the technological advancements of the early 1970s when halogen bulbs were newly being adopted for lighting. Despite its vintage, the lamp remains in very good original condition, showcasing only minor wear from age and usage. A notable feature is the partial Arteluce sticker still present on the inside of the shade, a mark of authenticity and a reminder of the lamp’s prestigious origin. The model 1096 floor lamp is a fine example of Sarfatti’s ability to blend functionality with modernist aesthetics, making it a valuable piece for collectors and design enthusiasts alike.
