This exceptionally rare screen, model 761 designed by Gianfranco Frattini and manufactured by Cassina in Italy in 1960, is a masterpiece of modular design and craftsmanship. Constructed from solid rosewood, it features an ingenious system where each panel is identical, allowing for an infinitely extendable configuration. Frattini’s innovative interlocking mechanism uses a rubber strip to seamlessly connect each structure, creating a flexible and functional partition with a striking architectural presence. This specific screen consists of 4 of those frames, connected to each other.
The screen’s central section is composed of black rubber straps overlapping each other, providing a bold contrast to the rich rosewood frame, which showcases deep, almost black veins running through the grain. In the middle there is a black metal flat bar that provides stability to the structure. A particularly refined detail is the intricate woodworking connections at the corners of each frame, a testament to Frattini’s precision and expertise. Additionally, the screen is subtly elevated by two small feet that project from each frame, lending the piece a sense of lightness and elegance.
In very good condition, this screen displays a gentle patina and minor signs of wear consistent with its age, enhancing its historical character. Given its rarity and exceptional craftsmanship, it stands as an almost museum worthy collector’s item, a true gem of mid-century Italian design. Finding such a piece in this condition is exceedingly difficult, making it a coveted addition to any discerning collection or interior.
