Highly rare pair of stacking cabinets designed by Gerrit Rietveld and made by his carpenter Gerard vd Groenekan, The Netherlands 1925. These cabinets were made ca. 1935 for an interior Rietveld did for Family Oosterhoff. These 2 come from a set of 9 which was split along the years under their 3 grand children. This design is Donald Judd 60 years ahead of time. The cabinets are made from black painted plywood. The black paint is a repaint and has been done a long time ago in the past so this already shows a beautiful patina from age. Beautiful details are the joint connections on the corners. Typical minimalistic design by one of the greatest modern architects of all times.
Provenance: This pair of cabinets comes from as set of 9 purchased by H.M. de Rijk & J. Oosterhoff. They had there interior decorated by Rietveld in ca. 1935. Several letters of the correspondence of the furniture are in the Rietveld Schroder archive and so the cabinets can be dated back to 1935 minimum. Set comes with full provenance, pictures and details.
