This exceptional set of eight MT552 dining chairs, designed by Geraldo de Barros and manufactured by Unilabor in Brazil in 1955, is a stunning example of Brazilian modernist design. These chairs combine elegant form and superior craftsmanship, showcasing a solid rosewood structure with cane-finished seats and backs. The interplay between the rich rosewood grain and the light, airy cane webbing gives the chairs a sense of transparency and sophistication. This chair was possible to order in different finishes, with upholstered seats and backs for example, the cane version is for me the most elegant one. Cushions hoever are advised to add for seating. The design is marked by its slim, tapered feet and the gentle curve of the backrest, creating a refined and timeless silhouette. The rosewood’s natural warmth contrasts beautifully with the lightness of the cane, resulting in a harmonious balance of materials and textures.
This set of eight chairs has been fully restored and is in excellent condition, ready to bring elegance to any dining space. Such sets are incredibly rare, especially in this pristine state, making them a highly sought-after addition for collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century modern furniture.
These chairs are emblematic of Brazilian modernism, a design movement renowned for its innovative use of hardwoods and commitment to elegant, functional forms. Brazil’s abundance of exquisite woods and its tradition of refined craftsmanship have made its furniture internationally revered and highly collectible. A true representation of Geraldo de Barros’s design philosophy, this set is more than just seating—it’s a work of art, embodying the sophistication and timeless appeal of mid-20th-century Brazilian design.
