This highly rare set of four plywood dining chairs was designed by Geoffrey Harcourt for Artifort, Holland, in 1965. These chairs, part of the 130 series, feature sculptural rosewood veneer plywood outer shells with open back, making them a striking example of mid-century modern design. The 130 series was produced with or without upholstery, and this particular set includes the upholstery according to the original design, adding to their comfort and coziness. The chairs are supported by four legs, although there was also a version with a star-shaped base, as depicted in the Artifort book.
These chairs were only produced for a short period, contributing to their rarity and making them highly sought after by collectors. Despite their age, the chairs are in amazing condition with minimal wear. The seats have been newly upholstered in a premium fabric featuring a subtly colored weave on a beige base, enhancing their visual appeal while retaining their vintage charm. Each chair still bears its original metal Artifort tag, a testament to their authenticity and heritage.
Please note that these chairs are sold and priced as a set of four.
Geoffrey David Harcourt studied at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1962 he designed his first series of small office chairs for Artifort. With his contribution, Artifort gains access to the international project design market. Harcourt initially mainly designs seating furniture for reception areas. His second design for Artifort, the series 042 from 1963, was an immediate international success. His philosophy is that the chair should focus on people and not the other way around. “First the person, then the chair.” Harcourt won many prizes and was awarded the title “Royal Designer for Industry” in 1978. Harcourt is best known for his innovative seating designs, which combine ergonomic functionality with sleek, sculptural forms. His work has been widely acclaimed for its comfort, aesthetic appeal, and pioneering approach to modern furniture, securing his legacy as a pivotal figure in mid-century design.
