This is a fascinating and rare early edition of the Patroclo table lamp, designed by Gae Aulenti and manufactured by Artemide in 1975. A remarkable example of Aulenti’s innovative approach to design, the lamp features a body crafted from clear grey-toned hand blown glass, partially enclosed by a distinctive irregular rhomboid-shaped metal frame. The frame is expertly formed by welding heat-resistant steel wire, creating a protective yet visually striking structure that complements the delicate transparency of the glass. In excellent condition with no damages, this piece is a true collector’s find.
When illuminated, the Patroclo lamp casts an enchanting display of shadows and highlights, as the light interacts with the intricate metal frame. This dynamic interplay transforms its surroundings, creating a mesmerizing ambiance that is both functional and artistic. Inspired by outdoor lights encased in metal grids for protection, Aulenti reimagined this utilitarian concept into a bold statement piece—one that commands attention and continually intrigues the eye. Whether as a sculptural focal point or an elegant lighting solution, the Patroclo is an exceptional blend of form, function, and artistry.
