Large slat bench designed by Charlotte Perriand for the Cité Cansado in Mauritania and manufactured by Steph Simon in 1958. The bench is constructed with solid teak wooden slats and featuring a sleek black metal frame, this rare bench includes a right-sided drawer unit with a stylish black laminate finish. Professional repair to the underside of the slats.
This bench, with its sophisticated, timeless design, is among the furnishings designed by Charlotte Perriand in 1959 for the homes of the managers and staff of the “Miferma” mining company in the city of Cansado, on the Atlantic coast of Mauritania. Composed of magnificent wood lattice attached to an elegant metal base, the bench can be used without cushions to accentuate its long, lean structure. With a single or two-seat cushions placed at the centre or along the sides of the bench, it invites various interpretations of use. The bench revisits and borrows from the construction technologies, materials and designs previously created by Charlotte Perriand to furnish the Brazil House in the Cité Universitaire complex in Paris.
