These Model 765 chairs, designed by Carlo Scarpa and manufactured by Bernini in Italy, are an extraordinary example of early 20th-century design that anticipates the aesthetics and innovation of the mid-century period. Designed in 1934 for Scarpa’s own home in Venice, these chairs reflect the visionary nature of Scarpa’s work—proving that he was already exploring concepts that would only become mainstream in the 1960s and 1970s. While originally a private commission, the design was later brought into production by Bernini in 1976, cementing its place in design history.
Crafted partly from plywood with beautiful walnut veneer and solid wood, the Model 765 chairs have a striking visual appeal. The warm, rich grain of the walnut contrasts with the bold, bordeaux-red leather cushions on the seats, creating a harmonious balance between materials. The backrest, with its organic curves, is a key feature of Scarpa’s design language, and the distinct round cutout at the end of the backrest opening is both an aesthetic and functional detail. This cutout not only adds visual interest but also makes it easy to lift the chairs with one hand—an example of Scarpa’s attention to both beauty and practicality.
The chairs exhibit an interesting interplay of shapes. The organic, flowing form of the backrest contrasts with the straight, right-angled lines of the base, creating a dynamic tension between the two elements. This visual contrast adds depth and complexity, making these chairs equally captivating from both the front and back. The curved backrest, particularly with the unusual shaped opening, contributes to both the visual lightness of the chair and its comfort—offering support while allowing for a less obstructed view through the backrest.
The chairs bear the distinctive Bernini brand mark and the manufacturer’s sticker, verifying their authenticity. In their original condition, they show a gentle patina from age and use, which only adds character and speaks to their history. Despite this natural wear, the chairs remain in excellent condition and retain their original charm.
A total of 12 chairs are available, with this listing and price specifically for the six with red leather cushions.
These chairs are featured in Domus magazine (Issue 565, 1976, last image), underscoring their importance in design history and their lasting appeal. Scarpa’s mastery of form and material continues to be evident in every detail, making the Model 765 chairs a rare and significant piece of mid-century Italian design.
