A striking Model S 509 glass vase with an anodized steel mount, designed by Italian glass artist Aldo Nason (b. 1920) for AV Mazzega, Italy, in 1969. Handcrafted in Murano, this exceptional vase features a wide tubular glass vessel, vertically compressed at the center, creating a unique cross-pressed effect. The glass appears to organically “drip” over the anodized metal structure, enhancing its sculptural presence. It has a kind of organic plant, mushroom, clover shape.
The anodization process gave the steel mount a distinctive brown tone, which pairs beautifully with the smoky grey glass, creating a refined and harmonious contrast. Every angle reveals a different perspective, making this piece a captivating display of Murano craftsmanship and mid-century Italian design.
In fully original and excellent condition, this vase is a testament to Nason’s mastery of form and material.
Born into a renowned family of Murano glassmakers, Aldo Nason began his career at just 17 as an apprentice glassblower at A.Ve.M (Arte Vetraria Muranese)—the glass company co-founded by his father, Emilio Nason. By 1959, Aldo became a partner at A.Ve.M, and in 1968, he launched his own glass studio, collaborating with A.V. Mazzega and other distinguished workshops. His innovative approach to glassmaking, blending traditional Murano techniques with bold, modern aesthetics, continues to make his work highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike.
