A rare and striking example of mid-century Murano glass artistry, this Model S508 vase was designed by Aldo Nason in 1969 for AV Mazzega. With its bold sculptural form and distinctive use of materials, this piece reflects the innovative spirit of postwar Italian design and Nason’s unique ability to bridge traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde aesthetics.
Hand-blown in Murano, the wide tubular glass body is vertically compressed at its center, creating a rare and compelling cross-pressed effect. The smoky grey glass appears to organically “drip” over the steel mount, giving the impression of natural movement, somewhere between a clover, a plant, or a mushroom in form. This organic quality adds a captivating softness to its otherwise industrial base, turning the piece into a small-scale sculpture as much as a functional vessel.
The unfinished steel base, contrasts beautifully with the cool transparency of the smoky grey glass. This interplay of color and texture highlights Nason’s refined sense of proportion and material harmony. From every angle, the vase reveals new contours and interactions of light, shadow, and reflection, offering a multidimensional visual experience.
In fully original condition, the vase shows excellent preservation. The glass itself is free of damage, and the only restoration is a strengthening repair to the base at the center of the cross-structure, discreet and structurally secure.
Aldo Nason, born in 1920 into one of Murano’s most respected glassmaking families, began his craft early at A.Ve.M., the company co-founded by his father, Emilio Nason. By 1959, Aldo had become a partner at A.Ve.M. and later established his own workshop in 1968, where he collaborated with leading manufacturers like AV Mazzega. Known for pushing boundaries while remaining rooted in Murano’s centuries-old traditions, Nason’s work is celebrated for its sculptural integrity, experimental forms, and timeless modernity.
This rare Model S508 vase stands as a testament to Nason’s creative vision and technical expertise, a collector’s piece that encapsulates the essence of Italian design and Murano glass innovation.
