In 1954, the Italian-born designers Carlo Hauner (1927–1996) and Martin Eisler (1913–1977) created this rare model of club chair for Forma S.A. Móveis e Objetos de Arte, Brazil. Founded and directed by Hauner and Eisler, Forma was one of the most important and inventive furniture companies in mid-century South America, producing works that embodied a distinctly modern Brazilian sensibility while drawing on European craftsmanship. This particular design, with its elegance and sculptural presence, appeared in several of the company’s advertisements during the 1950s, securing its place as a true icon of the period.
The chairs feature a solid wooden structure with subtly tapered hardwood legs, lending them a refined, architectural stance. Their low, embracing form is enhanced by our choice of new upholstery: a hazelnut velvet with a dark brown reed trim, carefully selected to heighten the silhouette and contrast beautifully with the warm wood. While Forma is often celebrated for its iron-based designs, Hauner and Eisler’s wooden pieces demonstrate an equally sophisticated and more complex craftsmanship, entirely hand-made, with an exacting attention to proportion and comfort.
Offered here as a matching set of two, the chairs are in very good condition and ready for immediate use. Beyond their functionality, they represent a moment when Brazilian modernism reached full maturity: a blend of bold form, exquisite materials, and masterful execution. For collectors of mid-century design, they stand as rare and desirable examples of Hauner and Eisler’s enduring legacy.
