The iconic M1T70 Mondragone marble dining table, designed by Angelo Mangiarotti and manufactured by Skipper in Italy in 1969, stands as a significant milestone in the designer’s career. This piece marks Mangiarotti’s first use of marble in creating furniture for the home, making it a key development in his work. While seemingly simple, the M1T70 table integrates a variety of design elements Mangiarotti had explored in earlier projects. On one hand, the design is influenced by Mangiarotti’s CAP59 vases, incorporating circles, hyperboloids, and lathing. On the other, it represents a geometric evolution of his SK207, now fully realized in marble. One of the most remarkable features of the M table is its single gravity joint, which seamlessly connects the marble top to the base. This innovative design approach highlights Mangiarotti’s architectural precision and vision.
The M1T70 table laid the foundation for Mangiarotti’s future masterpieces, such as Eros, Incas, Asolo, and More. His exploration of rotational structures was inspired by his architectural projects, including the “Casa Tre Cilindri” (Three Cylinder House) in Milan, built between 1959 and 1962. The house, featuring three towers connected by a central vertical volume, was a structural engineering marvel. Its central load-bearing system provided flexibility in the design of the apartments, a concept admired by contemporaries like architect Richard Neutra during his visits to Italy.
This stunning dining table is crafted from rare Mondragone marble, known for its striking veining with grey, beige and white veins, giving the table an extra dimension. Mondragone marble, sourced from the Campania region in Italy, is renowned for its elegant mix of white, beige, and gray hues, accented with intricate veining patterns. Its high quality and refined beauty make it a sought-after material for both architectural and furniture applications. The table is in very good condition without chips or cracks and the table top has been professionally polished back to its original state.
